Banaras, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and one of the holiest cities for Hindus has a rich tapestry of cultures, beliefs, and exquisite craft forms. Famed for its rich silk brocades, Benaras houses a small group of weavers who use the unique missing weave technique by clipping the extra floating threads which are not engaged in design formation and lying loose in the back of the fabric. This is referred to as the Karhuwa’ technique and it is this that gives the curtains a semi-sheer finish as light comes through the cutwork.
